As we leave behind the holiday festivities and the new year begins, we may experience an unusual dip in mood . I recently learned that this is known as the "January Blues," which is a phenomenon characterized by feelings of sadness, lethargy, and a lack of motivation. Maybe fighting a cold, like I am at the moment, makes me wonder how we can help improve this feelings.

Maybe understanding the origins of the January Blues and how to combat them can help us, so here we go, deep diving into the subject.

reasons behind january blues?

The January Blues can be attributed to several factors:

  • Post-holiday Letdown: After the excitement of the holiday season, returning to routine can feel underwhelming.

  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): The lack of sunlight during winter months can lead to decreased serotonin levels, affecting mood.

  • Financial Stress: The expenses incurred during the holidays can lead to anxiety and stress in the new year.

  • New Year’s Resolutions: The pressure to meet resolutions can create feelings of inadequacy and disappointment.

Aromatherapy: Always a good resource

Aromatherapy can be a powerful tool in combating the January Blues. Essential oils have been shown to have mood-enhancing properties that can help alleviate feelings of sadness and anxiety. Here are some essential oils to consider:

  • Lavender: Known for its calming properties, lavender can help reduce anxiety and promote better sleep.

  • Sweet Orange: The uplifting scent of sweet orange can enhance mood and create a sense of joy.

  • Peppermint: This invigorating oil can help boost energy levels and improve concentration.

  • Ylang Ylang: This floral oil is known for its ability to reduce stress and promote feelings of happiness.

My favourite way to incorporate aromatherapy is adding essential oils to a bath, or doing a face yoga session with our serum. You can also find our aromatherapy-infused cream very uplifting thanks to its curated ingredients:

  • Vitamin E: This antioxidant helps protect the skin from damage and promotes a healthy glow.

  • Grapeseed Oil:  Its lightweight texture allows for smooth application in massages, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.

  • Rosehip Oil: Rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, rosehip oil can help improve skin texture and tone.

other Tips for Beating the January Blues

In addition to aromatherapy, here are some holistic tips to help improve your mood:

  • Stay Active: Regular physical activity can boost endorphins and improve mood. Consider taking a brisk walk or practicing yoga.

  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Practicing mindfulness can help ground you and reduce feelings of anxiety. Try guided meditation or deep-breathing exercises.

  • Connect with Nature: Spend time outdoors, even in winter, to soak up natural light and fresh air.

  • Healthy Nutrition: Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can positively affect your mood.

As always , take a moment for yourself—you deserve it.
